Chase and Discover both offer rotating 5% categories each quarter on one of their cards. Here's what's currently offering a bonus!
Q1 has recently come to and end, and that means new Q2 rotating categories are here. To recap, Chase's Freedom Flex offered 5% back at Grocery Stores (which usually excludes Target and Walmart), Target, and Gym memberships in Q1, and Discover's it cards offered 5% at Grocery Stores, Drug Stores, and Select Streaming. These were pretty solid categories; Grocery stores certainly make it much easier to maximize the $1,500 per quarter of bonus spending, but the opportunity cost is pretty high when I also have, for example, the Amex Gold card that earns 4x on groceries. Target is a great option, though, as are drug stores. Streaming can also easily be another $100 per month, but just remember to switch back to whatever your other streaming card is after the quarter closes (like the Blue Cash or the Sapphire Preferred)
Q2 will bring the always-useful Amazon as a bonus category for Chase, along with Lowe's. Amazon makes the rotating categories extremely useful, because you can load your Amazon balance near the end of the quarter to be sure you use the entire amount, since everyone will eventually spend the full $1,500...
Discover features Restaurants and Wholesale Clubs. Restaurants, again, have a pretty high opportunity cost with other great cards out there, but Wholesale Clubs is interesting. I know every time I'm at Costco, I seem to spend several hundred dollars more than I was expecting, so meeting the quarterly threshold probably won't be very hard.
